From 2 April 2025, all EU citizens and nationals of other visa-free countries will need an electronic entry permit, the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), to enter the United Kingdom. This new regulation applies to both private and business trips – e.g. for meetings, conferences or project stays.

What is an ETA?

The ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a new digital procedure of the British government for pre-checking travelers. It is similar to ESTA in the USA and is used to regulate entry into the UK for visa-exempt travelers. By introducing this measure, the UK aims to ensure greater control and security at its borders.

Who is affected?

All citizens of EU countries, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland, are obliged to apply for an ETA before entering the UK – regardless of whether they are traveling to the UK for business or pleasure. Business travelers will also need a valid permit in advance.

When does the new regulation apply?

From April 2, 2025: Entry only permitted with a valid ETA

How do I apply for an ETA?

The application is completely digital – quick and easy via the official ETA app (available for iOS and Android) the website of the British government

The following information is required for the application

  • Valid passport
  • Personal details (name, date of birth, etc.)
  • Travel details (purpose, length of stay)
  • Credit card for payment of the processing fee (expected to be around GBP 10)

The processing time is usually a few hours to a maximum of 3 days. After successful approval, the ETA is valid for several entries within 2 years (provided the passport remains valid).

What does this mean for companies and business travelers?

The ETA obligation brings with it new requirements for travel planning. In future, business travelers in particular should ensure that the permit is applied for and received in good time before departure. It will not be possible to enter the UK without a valid ETA – not even if you have booked a hotel or flight.

Our recommendation:

  1. inform all affected employees and travelers in the company
  2. point out the new obligation as early as the travel booking stage
  3. integrate the ETA requirement into your travel guidelines and internal workflows
